Dragon Q Energy Develops New Approach to 100% Uptime and Grid Flexibility for AI Data Centers

Dragon Q Energy (DQE), Open Compute Project’s latest startup member, is advancing The PowrTrain™, a portfolio of patent-pending electrical reference designs that create a grid-flexible hardware infrastructure layer for AI data centers. As AI data centers scale toward unprecedented levels of power demand, grid constraints are forcing data center operators to respond more dynamically to changing grid conditions without sacrificing the uptime that their compute infrastructure demands. The PowrTrain™ rethinks how power is distributed and managed across increasingly power-dense AI infrastructure, targeting 100% uptime, concurrent maintainability, and operational continuity while enabling data centers to become more responsible grid citizens.

The need for new power architectures is becoming increasingly apparent as AI scales. For grid operators, AI data centers represent an unusually large and increasingly transient class of load. As facilities grow toward hundreds of megawatts and gigawatt-scale campuses, utilities are introducing new requirements around how quickly they can ramp power demand, ride through grid disturbances, and respond during periods of grid constraint. At the same time, unprecedented demand for new capacity is contributing to growing interconnection queues as utilities determine whether and how these massive new loads can be accommodated by existing grid infrastructure.

For data center operators, these grid constraints are becoming a direct barrier to growth. Interconnection delays can postpone revenue, while requirements to manage power more dynamically introduce new complexity into facilities where uptime remains paramount. At the same time, power disturbances, equipment failures, and planned maintenance can take millions of dollars of GPU infrastructure offline. As the value and density of AI compute increase, even traditional “five nines” availability leaves a level of downtime that operators cannot afford. Operators therefore need power architectures that can help them secure and use available power more effectively without introducing new risks to compute availability.

“99.999% uptime is no longer enough” said Al Warner, Dragon Q Energy’s lead consulting engineer, who brings more than 40 years of mission-critical data center power experience, including work with Schneider Electric, Google, Microsoft, and Meta.

To address these challenges, DQE has developed The PowrTrain™ as a fundamentally different approach to AI data center power. Rather than treating uptime, grid flexibility, and rapidly changing AI loads as separate problems, The PowrTrain addresses them within a unified electrical architecture. Intelligent and redundant power paths with fast-switching controls are designed to maintain continuous operation through equipment failures and planned maintenance, while integrated energy storage enables facilities to ride through grid disturbances and respond dynamically to changing grid conditions. DQE’s patent-pending supercapacitor architecture provides the rapid response needed to manage increasingly transient GPU loads and maintain stability across the power system. Together, these technologies are designed to deliver true 100% uptime while enabling greater grid flexibility, spanning today’s medium- and low-voltage AC systems through next-generation 800–1500VDC distribution.

“Building on the growing ecosystem of SaaS-optimized solutions, DQE is developing the physical infrastructure layer needed for data centers to become more effective grid resources,” said Daniel Casey, Founder and CEO of Dragon Q Energy. “Software can optimize when and how compute responds to the grid; The PowrTrain is designed to expand what those platforms can accomplish by making the underlying power infrastructure itself more flexible without sacrificing compute availability. Bringing these layers together can benefit the rate-payer and unlock greater capacity for both data center operators and the grid.”

DQE is currently developing a digital twin to validate The PowrTrain™ while advancing its supercapacitor proof of concept. Digital-twin validation is targeted for Q4 2026, with integration into a pilot project’s engineering phase targeted for Q2 2027. The company plans to commercialize The PowrTrain™ through licensing, enabling equipment manufacturers, data center developers, engineering firms, and technology partners to integrate its reference architectures and associated intellectual property into projects ranging from edge deployments to next-generation AI factories.

As The PowrTrain™ moves toward commercial deployment, DQE offers potential partners a number of ways to engage. To learn more about the technology, pilot projects, or partnership opportunities, contact info@dragonqenergy.com.
